Training, Showing and
Promoting Sound Tennessee Walking Horses
INTRODUCTION:
My name is Dena Plendl.  I am a professional TWH and gaited horse trainer. I have over 25 years experience with gaited horses in California, Washington, Oregon nd Iowa. I am married to Scott Plendl, who has many years in the horse industry breeding & raising Quarter Horses  and Appaloosas.  We work together starting, finishing and correcting Tennessee Walking Horses. I am a sound trainer.
Training Facility  at our home in Le Mars, Iowa
TRAINING:
Your horse is started with basic ground work to develop a natural consistent gait.  We increase the speed as your horse develops.  Our rule of thumb is
never sacrifice form for speed.  TWH's are capable of all sorts riding disciplines....reining, field trials, gaming, working cows, etc.  Our training facility includes a 100 x 200 outdoor arena, 50 x 80 indoor arena, a 60' round pen, outdoor turnouts, 5 stall heated horse barn (Complete May 2007) with office/tack room, 3 stall heated foaling barn and thousands of acres of bean/corn fields around our home for riding.
Trail riding horses (as well as show horses) are taught that they will not just be on auto-pilot.  A horse gives the rider signals all the time with pricked ears, tense muscles and inconsistent gaits.  Keep the horses mind busy on work in the ring and on the trail and you will have less problems.
Developing good minded horses consists of concentrated training from a good gaited trainer.  Most people do not have the time to begin this process, so we are here to help you.  Horses are creatures of habit.  Here at S&D Stables there are NO magic methods or training equipment, just a lot of time and trust put into your horse to  achieve your goals.  Contact Dena for training fees and apprentice program.
SHOWING:
For many years I showed Amateur.  Friends and strangers kept asking me to help them with their horses.  So I decided to become a professional and have now learned that this is not an easy job.  It requires daily handling leading, longing, brushing, riding, saddling, clipping, bathing and hauling to make quality horses.  In my eyes, it doesn't matter if you want a trail or show horse it all requires effort on your part and our part to make all of this a reality.

S&D Stables ONLY shows flat shod Tennessee Walking Horses. We specialize in Western, English, Model and Futurity horses.   We can help you and your horse in and out of the show ring.
BREEDING:
We have several customers that have quality flat shod stallions.  Feel free to ask for names and phone numbers of those people for pedigree and prices.
TWH CHARACTERISTICS:
The TWH was developed for the purpose of riding, driving and light farm work.  They became popular with Southern Plantation owners who needed horses with comfortable gaits to carry them the many miles necessary to inspect their immense fields.  They were also favored by country doctors and traveling preachers who spent many hours on horseback.

Typical TWH's are intelligent and affectionate.  They are best known for their smooth running walk and have become a popular choice for people that enjoy trail riding.
